Core ThemeKnowledge and the Knower
Bias and assumption, communities of knowers, the ethics of knowledge, and the cognitive tools through which individuals construct and interrogate what they claim to know.
Across 18 lessons and 7 topics, this unit addresses the foundational questions of the TOK course: what it means to be a knower, how personal perspective and identity shape knowledge claims, how communities construct and renew shared knowledge, and what ethical responsibilities accompany the possession of knowledge. Topics span claims and evidence, the individual knower, methods such as reason and intuition, and the open questions that define the epistemic landscape today.
Skills & assessment. Lessons build the core habits of TOK inquiry — distinguishing contestable from non-contestable claims, evaluating source credibility, and articulating the tension between personal and shared knowledge — providing a strong foundation for both the TOK Exhibition and the TOK Essay.
Optional ThemeKnowledge and Technology
How digital and algorithmic tools reshape what counts as knowledge, who controls it, and what responsibilities follow.
Across 8 lessons and 4 topics, this unit examines technology as both a method and a site of epistemological questions — from the historical development of technology as a knowledge-producing tool to the ethical dimensions of algorithmic knowledge, questions of access and control, and the boundaries that technology simultaneously extends and creates.
Skills & assessment. Students develop the ability to interrogate technological knowledge claims using TOK's key concepts, evaluating the perspectives of different cultural and social groups and situating current issues within a broader history of knowledge production.
Optional ThemeKnowledge and Language
Language as both a vehicle and a limit of knowledge — from translation and interpretation to manipulation, cultural meaning, and the question of whether knowledge can exist without words.
These 8 lessons across 4 topics explore how language shapes, enables, and constrains what knowers can know and communicate. Topics range from the methods of interpretation and translation, to the cultural and social embeddedness of linguistic meaning, to the ethical weight carried by the choices speakers and writers make, and to the fundamental question of whether knowledge can exist independently of language.
Skills & assessment. Students practise close analysis of how framing and word choice shape knowledge claims — skills directly applicable to TOK Essay source work — while also developing a conceptual vocabulary for discussing language as a methodological and epistemological tool.
Optional ThemeKnowledge and Politics
The contested relationship between knowledge and power — how political institutions produce and validate knowledge, and who bears the ethical responsibilities that follow.
Eight lessons across 4 topics examine the intersection of knowledge and political power: how institutions produce and legitimate knowledge claims, the role of evidence and expertise in decision-making, the ways ideology shapes what counts as knowledge, and the ethical responsibilities of those who control political information. Historical examples and contemporary contested questions anchor the inquiry throughout.
Skills & assessment. Students develop skills in identifying bias and evaluating objectivity in political knowledge contexts, building the evaluative rigour required for both the TOK Essay and real-world knowledge questions about governance, media, and epistemic authority.
Optional ThemeKnowledge and Religion
Faith, revelation, tradition, and the relationship between religious knowledge and other ways of knowing — including the ethical and communal dimensions of what belongs to whom.
Eight lessons across 4 topics explore the nature, methods, and scope of religious knowledge: faith and revelation as ways of knowing, comparisons with scientific inquiry, the historical development of religious knowledge traditions, and questions of ownership — including whether some religious knowledge belongs only to specific communities. The unit also addresses how religious knowledge systems intersect with and challenge other knowledge systems.
Skills & assessment. Students practise comparing methodologies across knowledge systems and evaluating claims made from within and outside religious traditions, strengthening the comparative thinking central to TOK assessment.
Optional ThemeKnowledge and Indigenous Societies
Indigenous knowledge systems — their methods, scope, and ethical dimensions — examined with attention to power, colonialism, and their relationship to the broader human knowledge landscape.
Eight lessons across 4 topics examine indigenous knowledge systems as legitimate and distinct ways of knowing: oral tradition, ritual and practice, and community-based epistemology. The unit addresses the impact of colonialism on recognition of indigenous knowledge, the ethics of ownership and stewardship, insider and outsider perspectives, and the place of indigenous knowledge within the totality of human knowledge.
Skills & assessment. Students develop the ability to compare methodologies across knowledge systems and to interrogate assumptions about what counts as valid knowledge — critical skills for the TOK Essay and for sustained engagement with questions of epistemic justice.
Area of KnowledgeHistory
What counts as historical knowledge, how historians construct and evaluate it, and the ethical and perspectival dimensions of representing the past.
Eight lessons across 4 topics address history as an area of knowledge: the use of primary and secondary sources, methods of corroboration and interpretation, the role of historian perspective and context, the significance of conflicting narratives, and the ethical responsibilities of those who represent the past. The unit also asks what the purpose and value of historical inquiry is for human understanding.
Skills & assessment. Students practise source evaluation, the identification of perspective and bias in historical accounts, and structured argument about the nature and limits of historical knowledge — all directly transferable to TOK Essay work on history as an AOK.
Area of KnowledgeThe Human Sciences
The methods, perspectives, and ethical dimensions of knowledge produced when human beings are both the investigators and the subjects of inquiry.
Eight lessons across 4 topics examine what distinguishes the human sciences from the natural sciences, the challenge of objectivity when studying human behaviour, the role of quantitative and qualitative methods, the influence of cultural and social context on research, and the ethical responsibilities arising when human subjects are involved. The unit also surveys key open questions at the frontier of human scientific knowledge.

Area of KnowledgeThe Natural Sciences
The methods, scope, and ethical dimensions of scientific knowledge — from hypothesis and falsifiability to paradigm shifts, societal decision-making, and the boundaries of what science can claim to know.
Eight lessons across 4 topics examine the natural sciences as an area of knowledge: the scientific method, the status of models, theories and laws, the history of paradigm shifts and scientific revolutions, the influence of culture and funding on research directions, and the ethical responsibilities arising from the production and application of scientific knowledge. The unit also addresses the current frontier of unanswered scientific questions.
Skills & assessment. Students practise evaluating the reliability and limits of scientific knowledge claims and situating scientific knowledge within broader social and historical contexts — directly supporting TOK Essay arguments about the natural sciences.
Area of KnowledgeMathematics
The nature of mathematical knowledge — proof, certainty, and real-world application — alongside questions of cultural contribution, access, and whether mathematics is discovered or invented.
Eight lessons across 4 topics address mathematics as a distinctive area of knowledge: the role of proof, axioms, and deductive reasoning; mathematical modelling; the historical development of mathematical concepts; cultural contributions to mathematics; ethical questions of access and power in mathematical education; and the fundamental question of whether mathematical knowledge is discovered or invented. The unit also examines mathematics in relation to other areas of knowledge.
Skills & assessment. Students develop clear arguments about the nature and justification of mathematical knowledge, supporting the precise, concept-focused thinking required in the TOK Essay when mathematics is the chosen area of knowledge.
Area of KnowledgeThe Arts
What kind of knowledge the arts produce, how artistic meaning is constructed and contested, and the ethical responsibilities of artists, audiences, and critics.
Eight lessons across 4 topics examine the arts as an area of knowledge: artistic techniques and traditions as knowledge-producing tools, interpretation and evaluation as methods of knowing, the roles of the artist, audience, and critic in constructing meaning, the influence of cultural and historical context, the use and misuse of art for political or ideological purposes, and the relationship between artistic knowledge and other knowledge forms.
Skills & assessment. Students practise articulating what makes artistic knowledge claims distinctive — including how interpretation and evaluation function as justification — building the conceptual vocabulary needed for TOK Essay and Exhibition work involving the arts.
Unit 12The Knowledge Framework
A systematic lens for comparing scope, methods, perspectives, and ethics across the Areas of Knowledge and Optional Themes.
Eight lessons across 4 topics develop students' command of the Knowledge Framework as a comparative analytical tool. Topics address scope and the boundaries of disciplinary knowledge, methods and their strengths and limitations, the role of historical, cultural, and insider/outsider perspectives, and the interaction between values, ethical judgments, and knowledge claims — applied across multiple areas of knowledge and themes.
Skills & assessment. By the end of this unit, students are equipped to use the Knowledge Framework to structure comparative arguments — a skill central to sustained, well-organised TOK Essays and to coherent Exhibition justifications.
Unit 13TOK Concepts
A focused inquiry into the six key TOK concepts — certainty, evidence, interpretation, objectivity, power, and responsibility — as tools for interrogating knowledge claims across all areas.
Twelve lessons across 6 topics examine the core epistemological concepts that underpin the entire TOK course. Each topic takes a pair of related concepts — certainty and truth, evidence and justification, interpretation and explanation, objectivity and perspective, power and cultural values, and responsibility — and explores both their theoretical content and their application across different areas of knowledge and themes.
Skills & assessment. These lessons give students a precise conceptual vocabulary and the habit of applying it rigorously to knowledge claims — directly strengthening the quality of argument in TOK Essays and the conceptual grounding of Exhibition entries.
