Eight lessons across three topics explore the Ingenio humano thematic area: scientific and technological advances in the Hispanic world, the ethical dimensions of digital technology, cinema, music, literature and the visual arts, and the historical development and stylistic resources of Spanish as a language.

Skills & assessment. Lessons build the vocabulary and analytical register to discuss innovation, creativity, and language with precision — supporting discursive and argumentative writing for Paper 2, and developing the thematic breadth valued in the Individual Oral.

Eight lessons across three topics examine education, work, and welfare systems; family structures and gender roles; urban and rural community life; the influence of mass media and social networks; and themes of human rights, social inequality, and political movements across Hispanic societies.

Skills & assessment. Students develop the argumentative and evaluative language required to discuss social issues with nuance — directly relevant to Paper 2 opinion and argument tasks and the discursive strand of the Individual Oral, where engagement with real-world issues is assessed.

Seven lessons across three topics address the Cómo compartimos el planeta thematic area: the local impact of global economic forces, cultural diversity and multiculturalism, climate change and biodiversity, sustainable development, natural disasters, and international organisations working in and with the Hispanic world.

Skills & assessment. Lessons develop the register and thematic knowledge to engage with global issues in Spanish — supporting Paper 2 tasks that require students to situate local realities within global frameworks, and providing rich material for the evaluative discussion required in the Individual Oral.

Five lessons across two topics build core listening competencies: identifying main ideas and specific information, inferring meaning and attitude from oral context, recognising phonetic variation and regional accents, identifying discourse markers and cohesive devices, and using prior knowledge to support comprehension.

Skills & assessment. Each lesson targets the question types and task demands of the Paper 1 listening component, with structured strategy practice applicable to both SL and HL, and explicit attention to the range of Spanish varieties students encounter in authentic audio texts.

Eight lessons across three topics address the full range of reading competencies: locating explicit and implicit information, understanding vocabulary in context, analysing purpose, tone, and point of view, recognising the formal conventions of text types, and — for HL — analytical and thematic reading of literary narrative and poetry.

Skills & assessment. Lessons align directly with the Paper 1 reading tasks at both SL and HL, with the literary text topic providing HL students with the close-reading foundations required for the Individual Oral and HL essay components.

Seven lessons across three topics develop written production competencies: structuring arguments logically with discourse markers, selecting appropriate register and tone, writing for a range of purposes and audiences, applying the formal conventions of specific text types, and — for HL — constructing complex arguments and synthesising information from multiple sources.

Skills & assessment. The unit maps directly onto the Paper 2 tasks, equipping students to produce persuasive, argumentative, descriptive, formal, and informal texts with accuracy and purpose. The HL topic addresses the higher-order demands of synthesis and critical argumentation assessed at that level.

Seven lessons across three topics develop oral production and interaction: describing and analysing visual stimuli, presenting opinions and arguments on course themes, using varied vocabulary and structures, managing conversation and negotiating meaning, responding to questions in authentic dialogic exchanges, and — for HL — constructing oral responses to literary passages and connecting literary themes to the thematic areas of the course.

Skills & assessment. The unit is structured around the demands of the Individual Oral at both SL and HL, with the HL literary analysis topic providing specific preparation for the oral commentary and discussion components assessed in that format.

Nine lessons across four topics address the explicit language knowledge strand of the course: core concepts of audience, purpose, context, and meaning; text-type conventions; thematic vocabulary development; Spanish morphology and syntax in context; idiomatic and phraseological usage; and — at HL — analysis of complex linguistic structures and production of nuanced, rhetorically aware language. The fourth topic examines formal and informal register differences and the regional and dialectal variation of Spanish worldwide.

Skills & assessment. This unit underpins every other strand of the course, providing the grammatical accuracy, lexical range, and sociolinguistic awareness assessed across Paper 1, Paper 2, and the Individual Oral. HL lessons are clearly signposted and address the higher level of linguistic complexity expected in HL responses.
