Unit 1Exercise physiology and nutrition of the human body
From energy systems and hormonal regulation to macronutrient strategies and gut microbiome health — the physiological foundations of sport and exercise performance.
This unit spans 11 lessons across four topics: the acute and chronic responses to exercise, inter-system communication through neural and endocrine pathways, hydration and nutrition strategies for health and performance, and — at HL — the composition and function of the gut microbiome. Key concepts including Function, Change, Communication, and Systems organise the content into a coherent physiological framework.
Skills & assessment. Students develop the ability to interpret data on physiological responses, apply command terms such as analyse, explain, and evaluate to exercise scenarios, and construct evidence-based arguments about fuelling, hydration, and adaptation strategies. Exam-style questions and mark schemes accompany every lesson to reinforce AO1–AO4 demand.
Unit 2Biomechanics
Newton's laws, musculoskeletal mechanics, and injury science — the mechanical principles that explain how the body produces, controls, and sustains movement in sport and exercise.
Nine lessons across three topics address the forces and motion underlying human movement, the structural and mechanical basis of movement generation, and the causes, prevention, and treatment of musculoskeletal injury. Key concepts — Forces and Motion, Form and Function, Structure and Function, and Systems — connect biomechanical theory directly to sport and exercise applications.
Skills & assessment. Students practise applying Newton's laws, interpreting kinematic data, analysing lever systems, and evaluating injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies using appropriate command terms. Exam-style questions and mark schemes are included with every lesson to build confidence with AO1–AO4 demands.
Unit 3Sports psychology and motor learning
Motivation, personality, psychological skills, stress management, and motor learning — the psychological and behavioural dimensions of sporting performance and skill acquisition.
Fourteen lessons across five topics explore individual differences in personality and self-efficacy, motivational theories and goal-setting, motor skill acquisition and practice conditions, psychological skills training, and the management of stress and arousal. Key concepts — Individual Differences, Behaviour, Change, Adaptation, and Function — frame the content within sport and exercise contexts throughout.
Skills & assessment. Students develop skills in applying psychological theories to real-world performance scenarios, evaluating the effectiveness of mental skills interventions, and analysing arousal–performance relationships and coping strategies using relevant command terms. Every lesson includes a lesson plan, student worksheet, and mark scheme aligned to AO1–AO4.
