Skills & assessment. The unit places particular emphasis on the key concept of identity, developing students' ability to compare social and cultural norms across francophone contexts. Tasks are designed to build the descriptive and evaluative language needed for the individual oral and for the text-production tasks of Paper 2.

Eleven lessons across five topics — Alimentation et patrimoine culinaire, Arts et expressions culturelles, Bienséance, protocole et codes vestimentaires, Cérémonies et événements sociaux et religieux, and Événements historiques fondateurs — examine how traditions are formed, transmitted, and adapted within francophone cultures, from gastronomy and dress to rites of passage and collective memory.

Skills & assessment. Authentic cultural texts and visual stimuli support the development of descriptive and analytical writing, while discussion tasks build the spoken fluency needed for the individual oral. The topic of founding historical events links directly to the kind of cultural contextualisation expected in both Paper 2 and oral assessments.

Eleven lessons across five topics — Assimilation et apprentissage interculturels, Communication verbale et non verbale, Croyances, valeurs et normes culturelles, Diversité des langues et influence interlinguistique, and Diversité des populations et migrations — explore the processes and products of cultural contact, from acculturation and lexical borrowing to the multicultural composition of contemporary francophone societies.

Skills & assessment. Intercultural comparison is central to this unit, and tasks are structured to develop the analytical and evaluative language needed for Paper 2. Lessons on verbal and non-verbal communication across cultures also provide strong preparation for the individual oral, where students are expected to discuss cultural perspectives with nuance.

Ten lessons across five topics — Divertissements et spectacles, Interactions sociales dans le cadre des loisirs, Passe-temps et jeux, Sports et activités physiques, and Voyages et tourisme — examine the role of leisure in francophone daily life, from traditional games and live performance to the social function of sport and the cultural impact of tourism.

Skills & assessment. Lessons use accessible, content-rich texts about francophone leisure industries and practices to develop reading comprehension and oral fluency. Writing tasks focus on the descriptive, narrative, and persuasive text types that appear in Paper 2, with leisure contexts providing natural entry points for personal response and argumentation.

Fourteen lessons across seven topics — Abus de drogues et dépendances, Concepts de beauté et de santé, Exercice physique et hygiène de vie, Maladies et épidémies, Régime et nutrition, Santé mentale, and Services de santé et médecine — provide comprehensive coverage of the Santé option, addressing both individual lifestyle choices and the systemic organisation of healthcare in francophone countries.

Skills & assessment. The breadth of this unit — the largest in the course — supports sustained vocabulary development across medical, nutritional, and psychological registers. Tasks include the analysis of public health campaigns, comparison of healthcare systems, and structured argumentation, all of which map directly onto the demands of Paper 1, Paper 2, and the individual oral.

Ten lessons across five topics — Divertissements numériques, Énergies renouvelables, Éthique et sciences, Éthique et technologie, and Impact des technologies de l'information sur la société — examine the opportunities and tensions created by scientific and technological change, with consistent reference to francophone policy debates, cultural practices, and ethical frameworks.

Skills & assessment. This unit foregrounds argumentative and evaluative language, as students are regularly asked to weigh competing positions on contested issues — genetic research, digital surveillance, the energy transition, and the digital divide. These skills transfer directly to Paper 2 and the individual oral, where the ability to present and justify a nuanced viewpoint is essential.

Five lessons across two topics — Lecture et analyse des œuvres littéraires and Rédaction créative inspirée des œuvres littéraires — introduce NS students to the skills of literary analysis in French, covering themes, characters, and narrative technique, and guiding students through the process of producing a creative text and accompanying préambule based on works studied.

Skills & assessment. This unit maps directly onto the NS internal assessment requirement, supporting students in analysing two literary works in French and in writing a creative response with an explicit commentary on their stylistic and thematic choices. Tasks develop the formal written register and metalinguistic vocabulary that distinguish NS performance at the highest mark bands.
