Unit 1Individu et société
Personal identity, education, relationships, leisure, and daily life — the foundational thematic content of the ab initio course.
Fifteen lessons across five topics — Éducation, Identité personnelle, Loisirs et activités, Relations personnelles, and Vie quotidienne — introducing the core vocabulary, structures, and cultural knowledge students need to communicate about themselves and their immediate world in French.
Skills & assessment. Lessons develop both receptive and productive skills, with communicative tasks framed by the key concepts of Communication and Identité. Students practise describing, narrating, and explaining in writing and speech, building the vocabulary range and text-type familiarity required for the written exam and individual oral.
Unit 2Organisations sociales
Community, work, health, media, and celebration — the social structures that shape life in the Francophone world.
Fifteen lessons across five topics — Célébrations et traditions, Communauté et voisinage, Médias et communication, Santé et bien-être, and Travail et professions — building the thematic vocabulary and intercultural knowledge required to discuss social organisation in French-speaking contexts.
Skills & assessment. Lessons draw on the key concepts of Communication, Culture, and Communication interculturelle, with tasks that move students from comprehension to production. Text types relevant to social and professional contexts — including formal letters, articles, and dialogues — are introduced and practised with exam-aligned tasks and mark schemes.
Unit 3Partage de la planète
Environment, intercultural understanding, global resources, geography, and travel — the wider world through a Francophone lens.
Fifteen lessons across five topics — Alimentation et ressources mondiales, Compréhension interculturelle, Environnement et nature, Géographie humaine et urbanisation, and Voyages et tourisme — developing the language and cultural awareness needed to engage with global issues in French.
Skills & assessment. The unit places particular emphasis on Communication interculturelle and cultural comparison, asking students to reflect on similarities and differences between their own culture and Francophone communities. Tasks build the evaluative and descriptive language required for extended written responses and the individual oral, supported throughout by lesson plans, worksheets, and mark schemes.
Unit 4Grammaire et structures linguistiques
The verb system, sentence structures, text-type conventions, and thematic vocabulary — the linguistic foundations of the ab initio course.
Twelve lessons across four topics — Registres et types de textes, Structures de la phrase, Système verbal, and Vocabulaire thématique — providing systematic coverage of the grammar and language structures students need to produce accurate and appropriate French across all three themes.
Skills & assessment. Each lesson isolates a specific linguistic feature — from adjectival agreement and pronoun use to the passé composé, imparfait, and text-type conventions — and provides structured practice through communicative tasks. The unit supports accuracy in written production and reinforces the register and structural knowledge assessed across both the written exam and the individual oral.
