Unit 1What is Digital Society?

This unit's 3 lessons address a single foundational topic — the defining characteristics of digital society, the historical evolution from analog to digital systems, and the interconnections between technology, society, and human behaviour. The key concepts of Systems and Change provide the analytical lens from the outset.
Skills & assessment. Students practise defining and contextualising key terms, applying the Systems and Change concepts to historical and contemporary examples, and constructing initial analytical statements about the relationship between technological development and societal transformation.
Unit 2Key Concepts in Digital Society
Seven key concepts — Change, Expression, Identity, Power, Space, Systems, and Values & Ethics — examined through the lens of how digital technology reshapes human experience.
Across 21 lessons and 7 topics, this unit develops students' working understanding of each of the course's key concepts as applied to digital society. Topics range from the pace of technological disruption and freedom of expression online, to algorithmic power, the digital divide, and ethical frameworks for evaluating technology decisions.
Skills & assessment. Lessons build the conceptual vocabulary and analytical habits central to the course — practising concept application, evaluating competing perspectives, and constructing structured arguments about the social, political, and ethical dimensions of digital change.
Unit 3Digital Technologies
From data and algorithms to AI and autonomous systems — the technical and social dimensions of the digital technologies that underpin contemporary society.
This unit's 21 lessons span 7 topics: data (types, storage, big data), algorithms (bias, recommendation systems, filter bubbles), computers (hardware, Moore's Law, ubiquitous computing), networks and the internet (protocols, cybersecurity, net neutrality), media (ownership, misinformation, convergence), artificial intelligence (foundations, applications, ethics), and robots and autonomous technologies. Technical content is consistently framed through the course's key concepts.
Skills & assessment. Students develop the ability to explain how digital technologies function, analyse their societal implications using conceptual frameworks, and evaluate the ethical and political dimensions of design choices — skills central to both internal and external assessment tasks.
Unit 4Impacts of Digital Society
A systematic examination of how digitalisation reshapes culture, economies, environments, health, knowledge systems, political processes, and social life.
Across 21 lessons and 7 topics, this unit examines the wide-ranging impacts of digital technology: cultural homogenisation and heritage loss; automation and the digital economy; e-waste and sustainable design; digital health and misinformation; intellectual property and open access; digital democracy and state surveillance; and online communities, cyberbullying, and digital inclusion. Each topic is framed through relevant key concepts and real-world case studies.
Skills & assessment. Lessons develop students' capacity to evaluate multi-dimensional impacts, weigh evidence from contrasting perspectives, and construct well-structured analytical responses — directly supporting extended response and essay-style assessment tasks.
Unit 5Digital Society and the Future
Global well-being, international governance, and sustainable development as frameworks for evaluating the long-term trajectory of digital society.
This unit's 9 lessons address 3 topics: global digital well-being (measuring well-being, balancing connectivity and harm, ethics of technology design); governance and human rights (international frameworks, privacy and expression rights, cross-border enforcement challenges); and sustainable development (the UN SDGs, responsible innovation, the circular economy, and community-led digital initiatives).
Skills & assessment. Lessons ask students to synthesise learning from across the course, applying multiple key concepts to global-scale questions and practising the kind of structured, evidence-based evaluation required in final assessment tasks.
Additional Core TopicsTechnical Foundations, Emerging Technologies & Specialist Areas
Thirty-five focused lessons extending coverage into the technical, conceptual, and specialist dimensions of digital society not fully addressed within the main units.
These 35 lessons — each a standalone topic — address areas including data representation and number systems, cloud computing, databases, compression, and operating systems; conceptual and methodological foundations such as the six key concepts framework and systems thinking; emerging technologies including quantum computing, VR/AR, IoT, NLP, and blockchain; and critical digital literacy areas such as deepfakes, disinformation, digital activism, whistleblowing, and platform governance. The HL extension lesson develops comparative case-study methodology.
